Richard Johnson is better known for his work with exploratory music but he is also an ardent field recordist [as he says "when he gets the time"]. This recording was taken in the Mountain Forests around Canberra in Namadgi National Park on Orroral Ridge. This particular place he says is so special to him it feel like it is sacred, a place of tranquility and reflection, space and depth of connection to the environment. It is also a place for Lyrebirds and in this 29 minutes we hear the stunning song and ventriloquism of this astonishing bird. The lyrebird comes in and out of aural focus as it moves around the forest and there are moments of quiet followed by very close calls.
