about

This is a live performance by the brilliant Monicker (trio) from the SoundOut festival 2020, during one of the worst ever fire smoke hazes to have blanketed Canberra. We, at SoundOut, were so very pleased they were able to make it under such difficult circumstances.

Monicker is the geographically dispersed trio of Roger Turner (drums, London), Scott Thomson (trombone, Montreal), and Arthur Bull (guitar, Digby Neck, Nova Scotia) that is committed to a vigorous species of group improvisation rarely engaged these days. Their geography being what it is, Monicker only plays while on tour; Something Burning captures them in an extreme example of this context, their first gig on a tour of Australia and New Zealand in which they faced ample jetlag, 42˚ heat and raging wildfires nearby, physical ailments, airline baggage-loss, etc. Despite –– or because of? –– these conditions, Monicker flings wide-ranging, dynamic, focussed, febrile improvisations wherein discovery and surprise are the priority… indeed, the reason for the trio to have travelled so far.

Cover photo by Scott Thomson, Back Bay, New Plymouth NZ. The sunset was so beautiful that evening, but clearly it was an aftermath of the devastating Australian fires that were the dramatically proximal backdrop of the Something Burning set. The photo suggests how beauty or intrigue can be sought or made amid such devastation, but not in its disavowal or neglect. The fire is something that we must face.
