about

Into the void is a multilayered soundscape that is reflective of Richard's perceptions of Savanhdary Vongpoothorn's Art and the influences that inform it. The works multilayered compositional form is reflective of the repeating motifs and form of Savanhdary’s Art with direct links to a dialectic between the modern and the traditional cultural forms; between Buddhism and the environment. It includes elements: Buddhist priest (Mungsamai Vongpoothorn) chants of the Triple Gem mantra; Buddhist marriage blessing chant [with other Vongpoothorn family members]; repeated motifs on the Laotian mouthpipe organ instrument the Khen played by Mungsamai Vongpoothorn; field recordings of thunder, wind, water, bell birds and casuarina trees; Gamelan gongs; gong like plucked fences from Mt Tenant near Canberra ; field recording of the sound of the canvas of Savanhdary,s art being punctured as it is made; and Richard Johnson's soprano saxophone in a water tank on Orroral Ridge/Honey Suckle Creek.

Intially it was conceived for the Australian Exhibition at the Casula Power House in 2009 in collaboration with Savanhdary and has recently been part of the Soundscape to a new exhibtion of Savanhdary's "All that Arises" at the Drill Hall Gallery ANU.
