about

This soundscape / collage is part of a response to the Out of Place Exhibition that ran at the Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra from the 17 April – 13 June, 2021, and included the artists Hany Armanious, Boyle Family, Bonita Bub, Janet Burchill and Jennifer McCamley, Fiona Connor, Thomas Demand, Dale Harding, Anna Kristensen, Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky, and Jasper Jordan-Lang. I deliberately sort field recordings that highlighted industrial sounds in the landscape such as air-conditioning singing; metal yard grushers; welding workshop; gravel roads sounds; excerpts from the film Safe; hammering; grinding rocks; bells modified post etc. These juxtaposed sonic pieces highlight a sense of embodied listening when we allow ourselves to truely listen and also it is an attempt to reflect in sonic terms a glimpse of the depth of the visual exhibtion.

Oscar Capezio, the curator of the Exhibition, has this to say about the exhibiton "Reflecting on our increasingly precarious notions of place and belonging, this exhibition examines ways in which contemporary artworks embody, transpose and reconfigure a sense of locality in a globalised world."

This work as SO-SA03 is preceeded by a companion recording in the form of FILTERS, SO-SA02 which is a section of this work in solo mode by itself in the form of huge air filters "singing" as it were.
